Starting something new is rarely easy, whether it’s starting a new job, a new hobby, or even starting to write this story. Most of us know that first step to something can feel heavy, filled with uncertainty and hesitation. Well, this is a story about new beginnings, and more specifically the beginning of a new project, one that we hope will continue to grow.
In our sector, long wait times are common. This raised a powerful question in our community: what if waiting periods could be transformed into something meaningful?
That question gave life to our new workshop series, developed with the support of CLBC. The Team prepared activities that were both practical and engaging – sessions that sparked conversation, creativity, and self-reflection. Our goal was to create a welcoming space where people could relax, meet others, and begin to imagine what they wanted for their futures. As the project launched, we were eager to see who would come through the door and what stories, hopes, and challenges they would bring with them. Each new participant was a reminder that behind every name in our system is a person with a life, a history, and many dreams.
One of the first participants who joined the workshops in our pilot cohort was a young woman with many dreams but little clarity on where to start. She was creative, artistic, and sensitive. Outgoing by nature, yet when she first entered the group, she felt shy and hesitant. After all, it takes courage to sit in a room of strangers and open up about yourself. Over the weeks, we watched her confidence grow. She began to share her story, discover her strengths, and explore the different paths she could take in life. She found motivation to apply for school, explore job options, and take concrete steps toward her goals. What began as uncertainty gradually transformed into determination. In just three months, she went from being a reserved newcomer to a familiar, vibrant presence in the group. Today, she is enrolled in a course to strengthen her literacy and math skills. She still dreams of opening a cake-decorating shop but is also curious about earning additional certificates and exploring new fields.
On the final day of the workshops, she admitted she felt nervous about the future, but it was the kind of nervousness that looks a lot like excitement. With new possibilities ahead, a supportive network behind her, and a growing belief in herself, she is now thriving and ready for what comes next.
Beginnings may be difficult, but they also carry the spark of transformation. This is just one story, but it reminds us that with the right support, even a waiting period can become a season of growth. The future is already unfolding.
