WISE Employment Solutions
My journey at Semiahmoo House Society started January 2004. It actually stared months before. I was enrolled in the Community Support Worker Program at Kwantlen College and carrying out my practicum at “Life Quest” (now Transitions) with Suzan Janetti who was my Practicum Co-ordinator.
Consequently, I had a part time job with DCLS (Delta Community Living Society) and working as a casual at SHS.
A full time position came up at SHS and I have been working here since. I have worked on almost every crew that has been a part of SHS. This has taught me how to job coach the diverse group of people we support. The thing that drives me is the look on someone’s face when they learn new skill. Especially the folks that no one else believes they could accomplish such a skill. I moved into Customized employment three years ago.
I enrolled in Annette Burrows Foundations course. This taught me how to go through the complete Employment process as I took one of our individuals on the Career Development Highway. Today I use these tools with many other tools that I have collected in my Semiahmoo House toolkit. The aspects I most enjoy about my job are the discovery piece, getting to know the families, finding out the individuals untapped gifts and talents and matching them with an employer who has a need for their skills. I also enjoy the marketing aspect of my job that allows me to engage with employers and communities from all over the lower mainland. It’s a bit like a treasure hunt, when you find the treasure, you have to find someone to share it with and that treasure looks like someone holding up their first paycheck and the biggest smile EVER!
Thank you Semiahmoo House Society for allowing me to grow alongside the organization and giving me the opportunity to do something that I never thought would happen. I entered Simon Fraser University.
I now am a certified Career Development Practitioner.
I love going back to the Treehouse and Transitions to see all the individuals that I have worked with over the years that have touched my heart, inspired my soul and provided memories I will cherish for a lifetime.
