A Flavorful Career: Nassim’s Journey into Food Services

Nassim’s captivating journey begins in Syria, where he spent his early years surrounded by the rich aromas of spices and home-cooked meals. As a young immigrant navigating the unfamiliar landscape of Canada, Nassim faced an overwhelming array of challenges. The vibrant streets of his new home contrasted sharply with the warm familiarity of his childhood. He was thrust into a world where the language felt foreign, the culture was different, and the customs were new. Yet, amidst this whirlwind of change, one thing remained steadfast: his profound passion for cooking, inspired by treasured memories of helping his mother create warm, hearty dishes for their family gatherings back in Syria. Despite the weight of these challenges, Nassim nurtured dreams of turning his love for culinary arts into a fulfilling career. However, he felt lost, unsure how to take the first steps toward that goal. During this pivotal time, he discovered UNITI’s WISE Employment Services for individuals seeking guidance and support in the workforce.

Upon joining WISE Employment Services, Nassim was nervous and unsure what to expect. He felt a touch of anxiety, particularly when faced with speaking English. His hesitance to speak in English stemmed from a nervousness about making mistakes, leading him to remain initially often somewhat silent in discussions. Nonetheless, his unwavering determination shone through in subtle yet impactful ways. For example, he met and took his time to talk to the employment specialist, Anirudh, weekly to work together. He made it a point to arrive early for every appointment and practice his English skills with Anirudh and the people in school.

Anirudh, discovering Nassim’s interest and passion, motivated him to explore the Food Services sector and improve his employability skills through Employment-Based Learning Labs, part of WISE services. Though unsure, he leaned into this opportunity, immersing himself in a world of learning. As he delved deeper into the program, the flicker of enthusiasm for cooking and curiosity about the particulars of the restaurant industry bloomed into a want to see how he would do in the world of food. The significant moment of his journey arrived when Nassim stepped into the bustling Round-Up Café as part of the Food Services Assistant Certificate Program, where he spent one day navigating through many things. The professional kitchen was alive with energy—the smell of food on sizzling pans, the clashing of utensils, and the delightful scents of dishes wafting through the air. Standing before a seasoned chef who asked him to prepare a salad, apprehension gripped him momentarily—the thought of his trembling hands betraying his inexperience. Yet, with determination, he pushed past his nerves, focusing intently on the task. As he sliced the crisp vegetables and artfully arranged them into a colourful dish, he felt a surge of pride wash over him. Their encouraging words resonated deeply when the team gathered to praise his effort. That affirmation ignited a profound sense of confidence within him, marking an important turning point in his culinary journey. In the following weeks, Nassim secured a work placement at Alebi African Cuisine, a beloved local restaurant famous for its vibrant flavours and warm, inviting atmosphere. On his first day, Nassim entered the kitchen with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. He remained quiet, speaking only when addressed, yet his commitment shone through in his actions. He stayed late, meticulously cleaning utensils and prepping for the following day’s rush. This opportunity turned into employment, and as time went by, Cathy, the restaurant manager, noticed his strong work ethic and shared her observations with Anirudh during a check-in: “He’s a hard worker, no doubt about it.”

However, while he excelled in his responsibilities, Nassim grappled with the social dynamics of the workplace, feeling shy and uncertain when engaging with coworkers. To help Nassim feel more at ease, the team at Alebi, with tips from Anirudh, took thoughtful steps to foster inclusivity. They gently nudged him to talk, consistently spoke to him, and allowed him to articulate. Slowly, he opened up, and during one of the check-ins, Anirudh noticed that he was joking, laughing, and conversing with his coworkers.

During one of these check-ins, the restaurant manager, Cathy, recognized his progress and inquired about Nassim’s Food Safe certification. Knowing that this is important to the employer and Nassim, it was promptly arranged for Nassim to enroll in the course, and funding was secured. Nassim completed the certification within a week, a milestone the Alebi African Cuisine team celebrated.

Today, Nassim is a confident and valued Alebi African Cuisine team member. His aspirations have grown alongside his skills—he dreams of becoming a line cook and, eventually, leading a kitchen of his own, where he can share his heritage’s culinary traditions and flavours with a broader audience. His remarkable journey exemplifies resilience, the transformative power of mentorship, and the importance of creating inclusive, supportive environments for newcomers and individuals facing obstacles. Nassim’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination, encouragement, and opportunity, even the quietest voices can rise to achieve their dreams and create inspiring legacies.
