Once upon a time, in a bustling city, there was a young man named Jamel. He had dreams, just like everyone else. His journey began when he joined UNITI-WISE Employment Solutions for a youth project that offered young people like him the chance to learn new skills and explore job opportunities while still in high school. Jamel had always been interested in working with food, so when the opportunity came, he was eager to start.
During the project, Jamel learned how to work with different people, communicate in the workplace, and use his skills to help others. Determined to keep growing, he took the next step — enrolling in the Food Service Assistant Certificate program. It was a big achievement, and he felt proud of how far he had come.
Next came putting those skills into practice. Jamel’s first placement was at White Spot, a busy and popular restaurant. As a kitchen assistant, he washed dishes, cleaned up, and helped the chefs with prep work. He loved being part of the team and contributing to something bigger.
But Jamel wasn’t one to wait for life to happen – he actively sought opportunities. Alongside his Employment Specialist, he went to job fairs, attended community events, and met people who could help him move forward. After six months of applications, interviews, and persistence, a full-time position opened at Compass Group Canada, inside the famous Electronic Arts building. Jamel knew this was the opportunity he’d been waiting for.
One phone interview, one online interview, and one in-person interview later… he got the job! Suddenly, everything shifted. He wasn’t just working; he was earning his own money and shaping his own future.
Then came the moment that defined it all. One day, Jamel shared something with his Employment Specialist that he had kept to himself:
“I haven’t told you this,” he began with a smile, “but I’m no longer getting the cheque from the Ministry.”
He explained that now, with his full-time work and higher pay, he didn’t need it anymore. When asked how it felt, his face lit up:
“It feels amazing. The ministry cheque was only a bit for the month. Now, I get paid more often, and it’s way more money. It’s like I’m finally being paid for all the hard work I’m putting in.”
He paused, then added something even more powerful:
“I love having a job, a routine, and my own money. I feel in control of my life now. It’s changed everything.”
In that moment, Jamel realized he had crossed a threshold – from relying on support to standing fully on his own. Every step forward was his own achievement, every dollar earned proof of his capability. And that pride, that independence, was worth more than anything.
This is only the beginning for Jamel. With each opportunity, he’s building not just a career, but a life on his own terms. And now, he knows he’s capable of creating the future he’s always dreamed of – one paycheque at a time.
