How Marcus Built a Career He Loves…
When Marcus first connected with UNITI-WISE Employment Solutions as a high school student, he faced the same uncertainty many young people do: What comes next? He didn’t know what kind of job would suit him, but he was eager to learn and ready to work hard.
Through a youth project that included workshops and career exploration, Marcus learned more about his strengths and interests. One option stood out: warehouse work. He enjoyed the fast-paced setting, the physical work, and being part of a team that supports daily operations. Over time, it became clear that warehouse work was a good fit, so we focused the job search in that direction.
With guidance and support from his Employment Specialist, along with interactive assessments and exploration tools, Marcus confirmed that warehousing was the right path, so we started preparing for interviews. His commitment paid off when he secured an interview with a well-known company, FedEx. It was over the phone, and like many young adults attending their first formal job interview, Marcus felt nervous. However, his positive attitude, clear communication, and sense of humour helped him stand out, and he landed his first job at FedEx as a Cargo handler.
The start of the job wasn’t easy. Early mornings meant waking up at 3:30 a.m. for the commute from Surrey to Burnaby. The physical demands were tough. But Marcus didn’t give up. With job coaching and support from his team, he mastered new skills and grew more confident every day. He practiced sorting and organizing packages and learned how to work confidently on the conveyor belt.
Today, more than two years later, he’s a trusted team member, training new staff and planning for forklift certification and his driver’s license. His story is proof that with the right support, determination, and hard work, uncertainty can turn into success and a future full of possibilities. Marcus continues to look ahead. Today, he is thriving in a career he enjoys and feels proud of. His story shows how early exploration, the right support, and hard work can lead to long-term success, and he looks forward to a bright future ahead.
